Article: What already exists, we do not create.

Column

What already exists, we do not create.

It was standard practice to increase offerings

The way brands grow hasn't changed much over time.

Add more colors.
Add more sizes.
Create new series.

Expanding options to make the brand chosen by more people. That's a very natural idea.
In fact, many brands have grown that way.
However, SYRINX did not choose that method.

We don't have a large number of products.
Nevertheless, we have chosen to continue nurturing a single product rather than creating new ones.

Why create something that already exists?

Every time I think of a new product, I ask myself a question:
"Does this product really have value to be released to the world?"
If I can't answer this question, there's no point in creating that product.

Just changing the shape.
Just changing the material.
That alone isn't a reason to create a new product.
We design only when there's an unsolved problem.

Only unsolved problems are given form

That's why we don't make trifold wallets.
We can reduce the surface area. However, that leaves the problem of thickness.
As a solution, we chose a bifold structure.

When Hitoe® Fold was launched, there was no other wallet that combined thinness and compactness to this extent.
Furthermore, the structure achieved without using any metal fittings was also a new challenge.

The same goes for long wallets.
There was a common belief that "long wallets are thick."
We tackled this problem without sacrificing storage capacity.

Musubu® started with the common belief that metal fittings are necessary to bundle keys.
Could they be bundled with just a leather cord?
That question led to a new form.

Hasamu® addressed the problem of scratch paper that is discarded after use.
We gave it a new role as a canvas for writing down thoughts.

We don't want to deny existing products.
Rather, we have great respect for their completeness.
Nevertheless, we still design because there are still unsolved problems.

The work of solving problems

SYRINX is not a brand that started with leather products.
It's a brand born from a design office run by an architect.
Architectural design is not about drawing shapes.
It's about organizing various conditions such as human movement, light, structure, and safety, and leading them to a single solution.
In other words, it's the work of solving problems.

That philosophy doesn't change whether it's a wallet or a key case.
That's why the idea of "making a slight modification to an existing solution" itself doesn't arise.

Design requires problems to be solved.
