The legendary Mekuru® Pen Case
"Design Journal" is a series that tells the "background of design" that SYRINX values. For the first installment, we will introduce the "mythical Mekuru® pen case" that is no longer available.
One of the common features of SYRINX products is their thinness. This Mekuru® pen case is no exception. Its smart appearance allows it to fit neatly in your bag without taking up too much space. In addition, the intuitive operation of "turning pages" creates a unique usability.
Currently, it is only available in one size, but there used to be an L size version as well. However, production of the L size was discontinued shortly after it was released. Do you know the reason?
The appeal of "Mekuru®" is that it has a structure that allows you to easily find and take out the pens inside by gently "flipping" the tip of the case. However, when it comes to the L size, only the tip of the small pen is visible, compromising visibility and ease of taking out the pen. Although it can certainly accommodate long writing instruments such as brush pens, if operation becomes stressful, it contradicts the design concept of "smart usability."
I realized this a while after it was released. The original concept of the product had been lost and it had become just a thin pen case.
If we continued like this, we would never be able to convey the ease of use and comfort that we wanted to provide. With this in mind, we decided to temporarily halt production of the large size and take a fresh look at what Mekuru® should be.
"I wish it had a little more storage space," "I wish it had an eraser in it too," are some of the things people have said. However, by narrowing it down to only what you really need, it becomes easier to use and its movements become more refined.
With this conviction, we continue to pursue pure design.
